An extracurricular heritage and language program for children in Šušnjevica

14.04.2011.

Every Wednesday since December 15, 2010, the extracurricular program entitled „Children learn to protect the local language and traditions" is taking place in the temporary space of the Heritage center in Šušnjevica. This program of guided activities for children is part of our project, Preservation of the Vlaški and Žejanski Language.

The goal of this extracurricular program for elementary school children is to inspire love toward and appreciation of the local and regional cultural, historical and linguistic heritage, and teach basic conversational and writing skills in Vlaški. Every Wednesday, children learn in an active, fun, creative, and multidisciplinary way. The program participants are twelve children living in the villages where Vlaški is spoken. The program curriculum and lessons are being developed by Dr. Zvjezdana Vrzić, while Viviana Brkarić leads the sessions and carries out the program with the children. Several thematic blocs are planned, and as the first one was devoted to learning about the local area, children, their parents and their teacher Viviana went on a trip to Šušnjevica, Brdo, Letaj, Nova Vas and Jesenovik, all villages where Vlaški is spoken. After the trip, the children made the first „tourist map" of the area, which you can download here. At the end of this year's program in June, we plan to organize an exhibition of children's work (click here to see the alphabet) and a performance of a traditional children's play, not unlike the one Viviana and the children prepared last year.
